Welcome to Sturminster Newton Town Council

Sturminster Newton is a rural town in North Dorset approximately 9 miles from Blandford to the East and 13 miles from Shaftesbury to the North at the heart of the Blackmore Vale.  It has a current population of approximately 4500.  The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book and some present day residents can trace their ancestors back for centuries.

The last fifteen years have witnessed considerable changes, but thanks to the vision and efforts of its residents and business community the town retains its character and vitality, it remains a friendly and popular place to live, work and visit.  It is well known for The Exchange, a vibrant performing arts and community centre and also the North Dorset Trailway - a popular starting point for walkers and cyclists exploring the area.  Sturminster Water Mill is an iconic landmark alongside the rare multi-arched bridge.

 Sturminster Newton Town Council has 11 Town Councillors and 9 members of staff.   

 

Eligibility to stand for Town Councillor in an election

 

Sturminster Newton Town Council and Dorset Council are both tiers of government and are obligated to abide by government legislation.

 

Dorset Council run the Parish and Town Council elections.

 

The eligibility criteria to stand as a candidate for Town Councillor is any of the following:

 

(a)    I am registered as a local government elector for the area of the parish named above

(b) I have, during the whole of the preceding 12 months occupied as owner or tenant land or other premises in the parish named above

(c)    my principal or only place of work during the preceding 12 months has been in the parish named above

(d)    my principal or only place of work during the preceding 12 months has been in the parish named above

This information is stated on the nomination form. Candidates sign this form as a legal declaration, specifying under which criteria they are standing.

 

Dorset Council are not responsible for checking the eligibility of candidates, only that they have correctly completed the form.

 

Should an elected candidate choose not to sign their acceptance of office, due to ineligibility, or for any other reason, a vacancy notice will be given. This allows electors 14 days to request an election to fill the vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option.
