July 2014 - Play Area Now Open!
Come and enjoy the new play area, now open at the Recreation ground. Aimed at the under 12's, the revamped area features a castle themed activity unit with double slide, a roundabout, nest swing and natter tubes.
Good news for our youngest residents – a brand new castle will rise up in the Recreation Ground play area this spring, to replace the old galleon which will sail off into the sunset......
To explain, the old galleon is becoming a bit too dilapidated to continue to be sea worthy for much longer, or at least to be a good place for our children. The Town Council’s grounds team work hard to keep it safe but the time has come when a completely new structure is a better long term option.
The Town Council have therefore decided to purchase a new climbing frame, roundabout, nest swing and “natter tubes” to go on the site later this spring.
Consultation has taken place with children at William Barnes School and Yewstock to find out what they thought the new play equipment should consist of and their wishes have largely been met. The kit is aimed at children aged 2 to 12 and in particular most of it can be enjoyed by children with mobility problems, which was an important point with the school children.
The materials in the old galleon will be recycled in various ways including using the wood for flower planters and what cannot be reused locally will be saved for future uses or sold. The existing “springers” will be reused and the safety surface underneath will be upgraded. The new equipment is guaranteed for 25 years so it will serve several generations of Stur. residents.
Unfortunately the play area will have to be closed for a period of time whilst the new equipment is installed. The grounds team will be putting up signs notifying exact dates that this will happen. We hope you will be understanding during this time. We are aiming to have the new play equipment installed well in time for the Summer holidays.
